Bilirubin Direct (BD) Test
The Bilirubin Direct test measures the level of direct (conjugated) bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment formed from the breakdown of hemoglobin in red blood cells. It is processed by the liver, where it is converted into two forms: indirect bilirubin (unconjugated) and direct bilirubin (conjugated). Direct bilirubin is the form that is water-soluble and excreted in bile.
