Testosterone Free – Hormone Assays
This test measures the free (bioavailable) testosterone level in the blood, which is the fraction of testosterone not bound to proteins like sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) or albumin. Free testosterone is the active form of the hormone that can interact with tissues and receptors. This test is important for evaluating conditions related to hormonal imbalances, such as hypogonadism (low testosterone), polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) , and andropause (male menopause). It can also be used to assess fertility, sexual function, and certain metabolic disorders. It is typically done when total testosterone levels are abnormal or when there is suspicion of hormonal imbalances that affect the body’s functions.
