Test Description: Reticulocyte Count

The Reticulocyte Count measures the number of reticulocytes, which are immature red blood cells, in the bloodstream. Reticulocytes are produced by the bone marrow and are released into the bloodstream where they mature into fully functional red blood cells. This test is used to assess bone marrow function and the body’s ability to produce red blood cells. It is commonly ordered to evaluate conditions such as anemia, blood loss, or bone marrow disorders. An elevated reticulocyte count may indicate increased red blood cell production in response to blood loss or hemolysis, while a low count could suggest bone marrow failure or insufficient red blood cell production.
