Mantoux Skin Test
The Mantoux Skin Test, also known as the Tuberculin Skin Test (TST), is a diagnostic test used to detect if a person has been exposed to the tuberculosis (TB) bacteria. A small amount of purified protein derivative (PPD) is injected just under the skin, usually on the forearm. After 48 to 72 hours, the injection site is examined for a raised, firm bump. The size of the bump indicates the body’s immune response to the bacteria. A positive result suggests exposure to *Mycobacterium tuberculosis*, but further testing (such as a chest X-ray) is required to confirm active TB disease.
