Test Description: SGOT/AST (Aspartate Amino-Transferase)

SGOT (Serum Glutamate-Oxaloacetate Transaminase), also known as AST, is an enzyme found primarily in the liver, heart, muscles, and kidneys. Elevated levels of AST in the blood can indicate liver damage, heart attack, muscle injury, or other health conditions. This test is used to assess liver function, detect liver disease (such as hepatitis or cirrhosis), or monitor the effects of medication or alcohol on the liver. High levels of AST may suggest damage to tissues where the enzyme is abundant, requiring further diagnostic investigation.
