The Alpha Feto Protein (AFP) test on ascitic fluid measures the AFP levels in the fluid that accumulates in the abdominal cavity (ascites). Elevated AFP levels in ascitic fluid can help diagnose liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) or other conditions such as germ cell tumors, especially when there is concurrent liver disease or cirrhosis. This test is used to assess the cause of ascites and guide further diagnostic and treatment decisions. It requires a sample of ascitic fluid obtained through a procedure called paracentesis.
