Test Description: SGOT (AST) + SGPT (ALT)

SGOT (Serum Glutamate-Oxaloacetate Transaminase, also known as AST) and SGPT (Serum Glutamate-Pyruvate Transaminase, also known as ALT) are enzymes primarily found in the liver. Elevated levels of SGOT and SGPT in the blood can indicate liver damage or disease, such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or fatty liver disease. These tests are commonly used to assess liver function and monitor the effects of medications or alcohol on the liver. Higher levels suggest liver inflammation or injury, while normal levels generally indicate healthy liver function.
