Test Description: Prostatic Acid Phosphatase (PAP)

The Prostatic Acid Phosphatase (PAP) test measures the level of acid phosphatase, an enzyme produced by the prostate gland. Elevated levels of PAP can be associated with prostate conditions, particularly prostate cancer. Historically, this test was used to diagnose and monitor prostate cancer, but it has largely been replaced by the PSA test in modern practice. However, it may still be used in specific cases to assess the extent of prostate cancer, especially when there is suspicion of advanced or metastatic disease.
